My Parnell Ancestors

William Parnell

2nd Great Grandfather, 1854 - n/k

William was born in 1854 at 15 Lord Nelson Street, Liverpool.  His parents were Thomas and Sarah; Thomas was a licenced victualler.

He married Eliza Ann Letitia Isabella Latimer.  Eliza came from a more affluent and cultured background; her father was degree educated and a Teacher of Classics.

By 1881 the couple were living at 31 Sidney Street, Chorlton on Medlock – just outside Manchester city centre. William worked as a French Polisher.

William and Eliza had 6 children: 3 girls and 3 boys.  The couple called their first-born William Latimer Parnell, keeping Eliza Ann's maiden name alive.

By 1891 the family had moved to 32 Bow Street, Salford.  The photograph above shows how polluted and crowded the slums were in Manchester and Salford.  In addition houses were often overcrowded and had few facilities.  There were no bathrooms or indoor toilets.
